Philosophy:
When deciding on shots and lighting I try to follow the aesthetic sense of German architect Mies van der Rohe: "Less is More...". I feel that working with fewer, more simple elements, invariably results in more natural and believable looking images. Not only that, but with simpler lighting comes simpler setups which translates into faster shot setups and less equipment needed to rent.
I believe the shot should be dictated by what the story calls for: Movement motivated by story. If the moment is intimate or subtle, then graceful movement should be considered, however if the moment's intensity is right, or you have to instantly catch a viewer's attention, strong movements and visuals may be just what is needed. Don't hold back.
Communication is also vitally important. It makes sense that the director, DP and crew are all working off of the same sheet of music. Avoiding problems caused by miscommunication in pre-production will save time, money, and ultimately increase the quality of the project. To this end, I am happy to use storyboards, location scouting, or any other means to effectively communicate.
I have a bachelor's degree from CSUS in Communication with emphasis in Media Production, as well as a master's degree from Chapman University in Film Production with emphasis in Cinematography. I have experience with many different 35mm, 16mm, and digital video cameras of various formats. In addition to film experience, I have spent 6 years in the military reserves (40th PSC, 40th Infantry Division), 6 years working for the California State Senate, and 5 years working in visual merchandising, Nordstrom display team.
